Scavenging in Fortnite is about more than just finding weapons and healing items to help you in combat. It is also about gathering supplies that you can use to build things.
You don’t need a huge amount of building materials right away when you start a new match, but you will want to gradually gather them as you play. You will usually do most of your building near the end of a match, so you will want to have a good stock of materials saved up by that point.
There are three types of building materials in Fortnite. They are wood, stone and metal. Wood is the weakest of the three, meaning it will be easier for enemy players to destroy the things you build.
However, it is also the fastest to build with, which makes it useful when you need to put up a tower or wall quickly. Metal is the strongest material, but it takes a long time to build with. Stone is right in the middle in both strength and build-time.
There are several ways to scavenge for building materials. You can find bundles of wood, stone and metal on the ground or in containers. You can also defeat other players and take the materials they have gathered.
But the best way to gather building materials is to use your helpful pickaxe to break apart almost any object in the Fortnite world. Try busting up an old car for metal or chopping down trees for wood.
When using your pickaxe, a small blue circle will appear on screen and move around to different locations while you swing. Aim towards this circle and each time you hit it, your swing will do double damage to the object you are destroying.
This will let you destroy objects more quickly and give you more resources. Hitting the circle every time can be tricky enough.
Colourful vending machines are scattered around the Fortnite island. These allow you to trade your extra building materials for weapons. Each one offers three items – one that is traded for wood, one for stone and one for metal.
The colour of the machine tells you the rarity of the items you are trading for. For example, a grey vending machine gives you Common items, while a gold one gives you Legendary items. If you have plenty of extra materials to spare, this can be a great way to find useful weapons.
A Port a Fort is a useful item that looks a bit like a grenade, but it doesn’t explode when you through it. Instead, it instantly builds a three-story metal tower. You can also find and carry around traps.
These attach to the walls and floors of your buildings to surprise players who try to sneak up on you. You will find these helpful items in treasure chests and llamas.
