We show off ten of our favourite indie video games…
Kerbal Space Program
In Kerbal Space Program, you are in charge of a space program operated by some adorable aliens called Kerbals. You must build and then fly spacecraft to try and meet a series of objectives – half the fun is in meeting them; the other half is in how hilariously things can go wrong when you fail.
Yooka-Laylee
A spiritual successor to the Banjo-Kazooie series, Yooka-Laylee follows in its footsteps by delivering colourful 3D platforming, funny characters and loads of collectibles. The chameleon Yooka and bat Laylee both have cool abilities that you must combine to progress and defeat the evil Capital B.
Abzu
Explore a mysterious underwater world in this beautiful game where you play as a lone diver. There are loads of amazing creatures to admire, as well as secrets for you to uncover, in one of the prettiest and most relaxing video game experiences you can find on the market today.
Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes
In this game, one player looks at the screen and can see a bomb. The other players cannot see the bomb, but they do have the instructions to defuse it. Cue some frantic back and forth as you work together to try and defuse it before the timer runs out.
Minecraft Story Mode
An absolute pleasure for fans of Minecraft, Telltale’s story-based take on the Minecraft world is full of references to the main game that are sure to delight veterans among you. In combination with a fresh cast of characters that we have come to love, Minecraft Story Mode is a runaway success.
Owlboy
Owlboy sure has been a long time coming, after starting development way back in 2007, but it was worth the wait. This clever platformer, inspired by retro games, has you controlling Otus, who is able to fly and carry allies with unique abilities that help you progress on your journey.
Stardew Valley
In this farming simulation game, you have to clear land, plant crops and raise livestock to earn in-game cash and grow your farm. There are also characters to interact with in the small town nearby and mines for you to explore. Down there, you can collect resources and battle against monsters.
Overcooked
Overcooked is a multiplayer cooking game that is all about teamwork. You and your friends will receive orders at a rapid pace, so you have to divide the chopping, cooking and cleaning. But with kitchens set on moving trucks, icebergs, and even the deck of a pirate ship, that can be pretty tricky!
Rocket League
Since Rocket League has been released, developer Psyonix has kept the updates rolling, with new modes, cars, and even hats to keep the game feeling fresh. Even without updates, Rocket League’s exciting take on football, where giant rocket-powered cars replace human players, is enough to keep us coming back.
Undertale
This smash-hit RPG has earned itself a dedicated fanbase, and with good reason. You explore an underground region filled with monsters, towns and puzzles. The game’s battle system is a blend of turn-based RPG and action-packed shooter – you select an attack from a menu but must then play a mini game to execute it. What really makes the game stand out, however, is the level of choice offered and how your decisions can change the story.
