The Pikmin series has always been about downsizing – shrinking you down to discover the microscopic world that the colourful critters inhabit.
And in Hey! Pikmin, Nintendo has taken that idea even further by moving the series to a handheld console. Here you once again don the spacesuit of Captain Olimar and enlist the help of your pint-sized Pikmin pals to recharge your broken-down spaceship.
To do that you need Sparklium, and to get Sparklium you will need to scour the 2D levels for hidden items. A snow globe, an old battery and a discarded NES cartridge might not seem like the best rocket fuel, but a human’s trash can be a diminutive alien’s treasure.
Olimar cannot do it alone, but with some petal headed Pikmin to clear obstacles, solve puzzles and take down enemies, anything is possible.
Top Five Pikmin Types
There is a Pikmin for every occasion…
Winged Pikmin
After first appearing in Pikmin 3, Winged Pikmin return to help you navigate some of the game’s more hazardous levels. They can lift Olimar up to help him over chasms too wide to cross with his jetpack alone, and they can also raise up some barriers blocking your way.
Yellow Pikmin
These Pikmin are always worth a place in your party. They are lighter than normal, so can be thrown up to hard-to-reach platforms, and they are resistant to electricity too, so won’t get fries like some of your other Pikmin. They can even open locked doors by conducting electric currents through their bodies.
Rock Pikmin
Not only are these boulder-like companions the strongest Pikmin around, making short work of all but the toughest enemies, they are crucial to accessing certain areas as well. If you find your path blocked by a large crystal, try flinging some of your Rock Pikmin at it. Smash, bang, boom – and you are through!
Blue Pikmin
Captain Olimar’s spacesuit means he can venture underwater any time – but the same cannot be said for most Pikmin. Luckily, Blue Pikmin have gills that let them breathe while submerged, so they can accompany you into watery environments in search of any sunken pieces of treasure.
Red Pikmin
These fiery fellows can handle heat and flames without batting an eye. If you find yourself blocked by a pit of flames, simply throw a group of Red Pikmin in and they will quickly douse the blaze. They also have above-average strength, so they area a good bet for taking down your enemies.
